Alcohol and cancer

I just ran across some choice info about alcohol and cancer.

Nearly 50 percent of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx are associated with heavy drinking. People who drink large quantities of alcohol over time have an increased risk of these cancers as compared with abstainers. If they drink and smoke, the increase in risk is even more dramatic.

We are constantly bombarded with propoganda about how bad smoking is, how it’s going to cause cancer, etc. I wonder why the alcohol link is news to me. I knew it caused liver damage, everyone does, and it kills brain cells, but cancer is new. And this after the 4 days of solid drinking for the long weekend.
