With more talk of things like this, more powerful smart phones, and faster wireless network connections we will soon see the next jump. VoIP is the hot new thing right now. Cell phones are the other hot (not so new) thing. How about we combine the two?
Right now it looks like people are only trying that for WiFi enabled phones, but just wait until the next generation of cell phone networks show up. I predict we will see cell phones that can make VoIP calls over the cell phone network without any need for WiFi. Sure it’s not here yet, especially not in the US, but it will be in under 5 years. Maybe under 3.
At which point the cell phone companies are really just ISPs who will provide the infrastructure and either make deals with the VoIP providers or become them.
